This past April, The First Report of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault issued its findings: one in five women are sexually assaulted while in college. In conjunction with the release of the report, the White House also launched a website to educate students and their families about this important issue. [Link https://www.notalone.gov/].
In Texas, victim advocates groups and rape crisis centers rallied in light of the task force’s alarming findings to develop digital tools to address campus assaults. The Texas Association Against Sexual Assault(www.taasa.org) in conjunction with Angelo State University and Concho Valley Rape Crisis Center announced in June the development of “TX Safety U”, a free app available on both iOS and Android platforms created specifically to assist college students, teachers and administration.
This app provides instant access to crime data for 174 Texas colleges and universities as well as connections to local, state and national on-campus victim resources on sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. Instead of looking through complex websites seeking help, students and their families can easily use the app. “The app” introduced by TAASA will serve as an excellent tool to inform and educate our students about the topic of sexual assault as well as to provide immediate resources for victims of sexual assault. We are excited to be able to offer this resource to our students and grateful to TAASA for providing it to our campus,” said Cleave Pool, Director of Counseling Services at Angelo State University.
Informative and helpful, this app is a fantastic new aid to for students and faculty. The “TX Safety U” app is available at Google Play and iTunes Stores. It may be accessed at www.taasa.org/txsafetyu/
